Vision and Mission
Action Learning, or learning by doing, is at the core of the pedagogy at the Asia School of Business (ASB), inspired by MIT’s motto of ‘Mens et manus’, mind and hand. It extends from identifying and understanding problems through deep analysis, to developing solutions through application of science and technology, to learning to implement them through practicing astute management principles.
The ASB – Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (IEC) plays a critical role in this journey for the students, both at ASB and in the larger community.
The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center at ASB plans to play an active role in helping to develop fledgling entrepreneurship communities in Malaysia and the greater ASEAN region. The Center will also offer a nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem for students at ASB.
The primary mission for ASB-IEC in the next two years:
- Promote #ActionAsia at ASB
- Develop an Innovation and Entrepreneurship ecosystem at ASB
- Build a community of Students, Sponsors, Media and Government
- Launch start-ups from ASB
- Establish ASB as catalyst to Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Malaysia and Southeast Asia
ASB-IEC has multiple programs planned to meet these goals; from workshops to learn how to develop products and businesses, to entrepreneurship competitions. Here are the different programs offered.
ASB 48-Hour MakerFest
This weekend program is designed to expose students from small and rural colleges to the fundamentals of Design Thinking and Digital Fabrication. During this weekend, students from Foundation and Degree programs
- learn to ideate solutions in teams,
- design products and
- digitally fabricate them.
The primary goal of this event is to help them realize that the basics of design, such as solution ideation, 3D mechanical design, microcontroller system design, and programming can be learned in a matter of hours. The MakerFest program is offered to both engineering and non-engineering colleges. While the technical learning is usually what excites students, the most valuable gain is the change in their self-confidence. As they take on challenges and develop solutions throughout MakerFest, their confidence is visibly improved.
ASB Innovation, Fabrication & Entrepreneurship BootCamp
ASB BootCamp is a weeklong residential program conducted at ASB where students go through an intense program in Design Thinking, Digital Fabrication and Business Development. The students will learn to identify and evaluate problems as opportunities, conduct stakeholder analysis, ideate solutions, fabricate products, develop business plans and pitch their ideas to local investors and entrepreneurs.
The first of the series of BootCamps is planned for Q2 of 2016.
ASB-100K Business Competition
ASB-100k is an ASEAN region-wide business competition series held in two stages.
The first one is a series of ASB-100k Business Pitch competitions held in multiple locations in the region. It will bring selected applicants from different regions together for sixty-second business pitch competitions.
The larger ASB-100k Business Launch competition brings selected candidates, with start-up potential, for a demo and pitch competition held at Kuala Lumpur for prize money of RM100,000.
Both these competitions are planned for the first half of 2016.
